29/01/2013 Online Education

Making the Modern World

The 'http://www.makingthemodernworld.org.uk/stories/the_age_of_ambivalence/02.ST.04/ 'used as an education tool for A-Level students. As an A level student myself, i started with the stories timeline, the website itself has a lack of information, it has many pictures, with a paragraph, at most, of text.

This is does not benefit the target audience, as the student will need to know as much information as possible. However, The lesson that is being given is about Personalk computers and information networks, as i read it, i am given significant dates like the late 20th century and such things.
The second page of the story, gives a lot more information aswell as figures that influenced the early Intenet for example, Paul Baran, who developed some of the first ideas on a distributed communications system. This is giving a more broad understandiung of the topic and would actually benefit me, as a student, in the IT A level.
Not only does the webpage have information such as text and pictures, it has further multi media parts like the video on Early home computers, this benefits the learning experience as it breaks up the text and gives the student a break from reading.

To Conclude, the website is a well made education tool, with a mixture of text, pictures and videos which are all at a high quality, with a high resulution, giving the webpage a presentable look. The information given in the text is thorough and gives the student significant figures and dates which will help them in their IT course, being an exam or coursework.

19/11/2012 E-Government

E-Government & the Digital Divide

Tony Blair has said that the he is backing "IT to support  business tranformation of government itself so that we can provide better, more efficient, public services." (source: e-government Unit).

In 2004, the Cabinet office report stated that the UK Government hopes to have saved £1.3 thousand million within three years by migrating its services into an online form.

As you can see from the chart above, the information given by the website shows that the UK Government has decided to go ahead with online services, apart from a few, all of the areas ive investigated have been done by most of the different websites.

25/10/2012 Weather Information

The Five Day Weather Forecast

The days that i had got a forecast for were quite acurate, the website I used was BBC Weather. For the 5 days i looked at the website was wrong twice but not dramatically, only out by a few degrees. This would not affect how i would percieve the day however as it did not actually change the weather, for example, it did not say it will rain and it, infact was a sunny day.

In conclusion, i believe this website is quite reliable, however i cannot judge this to a high extent as it was only a five day forecast.

If i was going to do this task again, i would maybe try to do a fortnightly forecast with various other websites to see if it is just as accurate for a longer time, or if there is a better website that can be used to be more accurate

02/10/2012 Activity 10- Plan A Journey

Activity 10 - Plan a Journey

Travel by Car

The plan for this activity is to get from my home address, to Tottenham Court Road, London.
So far on Google Maps their are multiple options on travel. There is a car, Public transport, walk or cycle option.

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=enThe first option i will look at is the car, which has said it will take 1 hour and 15 minutes, or in current traffic, 1 hour and 24 minutes. The cost will be fuel and Google Maps estimated at £11.90.

Travel by Train

The website i used to find out about travelling by train was National Rail.
The homepage has this section seen on the right which you have to fill out to find the full details of your journey. This includes where you are leaving from, where you are going and when you are going, plus other options like fast trains only.

Once you have chosen the options to do with tickets, you then get the option to which train you wish to use. For example, if i wanted to leave from Bedford Train station, to Tottenham Court Road, there are 5 options to chose from within the next hour, all with a different journey time.

The train i chose leaves at 1:18pm, with one change from St. Pancras Int. To the Underground service to Tottenham Court Road, this journey takes 1 hour and 12 minutes and costs £22.50 single fare (non return).

Conclusion

Both journeys take roughly the same time period, however the train is close to double the estimated cost of the car journey although the prices will change as it does not take into consideration what kind of car is being used. There are issues with using a car as roads are uncertain, for example, A road accident may occur and leave the journey stuck in a traffic jam. Also, the journey depends on what time you leave in the car, due to London being the busiest cities in the UK, a lot of people commute into London for their jobs, so a lot of traffic will be around the outskirts and inside of London if the journey was chosen to start in rush hour. In my opinion, i personally would prefer to get a train into London as driving in and around London is time consuming, bad for the environment and wastes a lot of money on fuel, even if it is nearly half the cost of  a train.
